We were really drawn to the simplicity and signature touches that Martyn had brought to his previous work and, after less than happy experiences with architects in the past, we wanted someone who not only shared our sensibilities but was practical, across the detail and prepared to manage the project and budget. Martyn did all this and more; he made a potentially stressful process actually enjoyable, quickly understood what mattered to us, guided us through the technicalities and, perhaps most important of all, found a great firm of builders to deliver what we all wanted. The result is a much admired house that is a joy to live in, a comfortable space for our family that easily absorbs a big party and two years on, still feels new and exciting.

The client is an artist and the ambition of the scheme was to create a neutral backdrop to her extensive collection of work.

The existing two storey rear projection has been demolished and replaced with a new two storey extension covering the full width of the house at ground floor level. The new ground floor has been sited approx 500 mm lower than the existing to create a better floor to ceiling height internally and to lessen the impact of the extension to its neighbouring boundaries.

The first-floor level has been remodeled to create four equally sized bedrooms and two bathrooms. At second floor level, we have extended into the roof space to create a large split-level master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and study area.

The material palette externally follows that of the existing, reusing the gaunt bricks from the demolished rear projection supplemented with reclaimed gaunts to match.
