We almost declined this commission as the client wanted such a traditional approach. Reinterpreting this late Victorian, four storey, London townhouse turned out to be great fun. The property was extended outwards at the lower ground level to create a large kitchen/diner opening onto a small patio via a ‘Crittall type’ glazed screen, with yorkstone flooring inside and outside. A 1970's conservatory was removed and the upper floors remodeled reinstating the original facade profiles and detailing.
Internally, Critall screens separate the formal dining room from the kitchen. Tongue and groove boarding clad the walls to match the kitchen units. On the upper floors, original floorboards have been carefully restored or relaid using reclaimed boards. Cornicing has been replaced with new to match the original, and new windows, shutters, architraves, skirtings and picture rails installed. The client has a large collection of Chinese cabinets which have been integrated into the design as well as bespoke cabinets/wardrobes for the bedrooms and sewing room.
