Grove Avenue

We began our project with Martyn in early 2014. It was a first for us in terms of the size of the ambition and Martyn did a great job of navigating us through it piece by piece. He took time to understand what we wanted and equally challenged us when it wasn’t realistic. He had a refreshing approach to cost control and really steered us well, throughout. We had a tendency to dream big and he humoured us and often found solutions but also challenged our thinking when it just wasn’t achievable with the budget. It was a large project; demolition, excavation and a large extension at the rear and a loft conversion with everything else stripped back and redone. Martyn dedicated many hours with us working through the stages of planning, he really understands how space works, the sight lines from all angles and making sure it wasn’t just beautiful but also functional. Not only was the design exactly what we were hoping for but the quality of the space planning was beyond our expectations. The true test I suppose is that over three years later it has stood the test of time both in terms of longevity and quality but also in the fact that we still love our house and it works perfectly for our needs. Martyn managed to balance bringing his expertise to the project and our desires for what we wanted. We are very happy with the end result.

The property is located at the apex of a junction of two roads that intersect at an acute angle giving the site a unique triangular geometry. A level change of 2m from front to back created additional challenges. We extended the ground floor level all the way to the rear boundary creating a courtyard accessed via glazed screens from the kitchen and dining areas. The courtyard has high boundary fences which help give this ‘outdoor room’ a feeling of privacy.

Visual connectivity between inside and outside is enhanced by a stained oak textured splash back which reflects the vertical layering of the external fences, and a polished concrete floor used throughout. The house was further extended at first floor and into the attic creating a new master bedroom suite. The attic has a large lead clad dormer with a full height picture window which takes advantage of a clear vista up to Alexandra Palace.
